Royal Chapel

The Royal Chapel is a mausoleum housing the remains of prominent Catholic monarchs. Heavyweights such as Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II lay buried here. It was built between 1505 and 1517 for monarchs who considered Granada their greatest triumph and wanted to be buried there. While that sounds extremely grim, a visit to the Royal Chapel is somewhat compulsory for most visitors to Granada. This is because the intricate building housed inside the Cathedral of Granada is definitely worth a visit. The Gothic architecture is in stark contrast to the Renaissance architecture of the Cathedral of Granada and provides an interesting reminder of the city’s varied history. The Sacristy Museum, which is part of the same complex, houses several impressive baroque paintings, portraits, and decadent ornaments. The display is tantamount to time travel or a history lesson. It serves as a perfect introduction to Granada for the uninitiated.
