Archbishop's Palace

Who is a bishop and why a palace? For a non-Christian, the order of clergy or hierarchy of the Church can be like a black box. So, here's a quick primer. In simple terms, the hierarchy is similar to how states are divided into cities or villages for ease of administration. A typical unit under a consecrated cathedral and its Bishop oversight is called a district, and which is sub-divided into parishes (with affiliated churches and chapels), presided over by individual priests. Catholic bishops typically claim apostolic succession, i.e. a lineage that is traced back to the original 12 apostles of Jesus Christ. Now, an archbishop is the chief bishop overseeing many other bishops. It is quite literally an epicentre of authority, and hence the palatial property that also facilitates everyday business of thousands of people within the district.

For a brief moment in history, the Archbishop of Goa was resident of the Raj Bhavan, before moving to Altinho Hill, opposite Chief Minister's residence. As the seat of Bishop, the premises remains busy on weekdays. However, if you go on a Sunday, you could attend the mass service in the adjacent chapel. Even on other days, it makes for a beautiful walk through the woody hills and admire the architectural splendour. It’s one of the highest points in Panaji, that offers scenic views.
