Beyond the brochure: The off-beat gems of Kashmir
Often referred to as "Paradise on Earth," Kashmir is well-known for its iconic tourist destinations, such as Dal Lake, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam. The majority of tourists are drawn to these locations by their stunning scenery, distinctive attractions, and much more. But if you want to venture off the typical tourist routes, and don't want crowds to bother you, here are some of the offbeat locations that provide an unadulterated view of the area's stunning scenery, vibrant culture, and kind people.
Gurez Valley
Tucked away in the Himalayas, the Gurez Valley is one of Kashmir's best-kept secrets. Snow-capped peaks surround this area, and is a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers. Gurez offers a chance to experience the pristine beauty of Kashmir because of its pristine landscape and sparse tourist population.
Doodhpathri
Doodhpathri, also known as "Valley of Milk," is around 40 km from Srinagar. It's the perfect getaway for people looking for peace because of its temperate climate, trickling streams, and lush green pastures. In contrast to its more well-known counterparts, Doodhpathri is still mostly unexplored, allowing tourists to experience the peace and quiet of nature without being surrounded by tourists.
Bangus Valley
Bangus Valley in the Kupwara area is a must-see for travellers wishing to get away from the typical tourist route. It is an unspoiled paradise with its undulating grasslands, thick forests, and glistening streams. With a high probability of seeing endangered animals like the Himalayan brown bear, the valley is ideal for hiking, camping, and wildlife observation.
Chatpal
Located in the Anantnag area, Chatpal is a charming hamlet which is often overlooked in favour of the more well-known Pahalgam. Its dense pine trees, old wooden houses, and lush meadows complement this destination in such a manner that one gets to find the right place for solitude in the middle of nature. Locals here are friendly, while its location offers a true Kashmiri experience.
Tarsar and Marsar Lakes
Trekkers should discover Tarsar Lakes and Marsar Lakes' hidden gems. These twin lakes, which are surrounded by magnificent mountains, offer stunning views comparable to those of the most famous alpine lakes in the world. With its diverse flora and wildlife and breathtaking views, the drive to these lakes is an adventure in and of itself.
