Pochampally is one of the ancient saree weaving centres in India. The village has etched its name into the annals of Indian textile history, thanks to its exquisite ikat weaving tradition. Along with the iconic weaving tradition, the village also showcases the weavers’ artistry and ingenuity.
Just like most traditional works of art, Pochampally too had its share of challenges. The USP of Pochampally products is the use of handloom. With the introduction of power looms and other machines to do mass production, there was a point in time when people started opting for the mass produced and easily available products. It is important to note that any handmade products do take time and may cost a little more than the machine-produced ones.
However, due to the efforts of several concerned non-profit organisations, along with the government agencies, cooperative societies for weavers were established. Through these co-ops, they were able to promote the heritage of the Pochampally fabrics to a larger audience nationally and internationally.
With the added protection of the Geographical Indication (GI) status, the weavers were able to protect the authenticity of Pochampally textiles.
