Cave houses of Guadix

The cathedral city of Guadix in the province of Granada is perfect for those who like going off the beaten path. The most interesting feature of this city is that most of the inhabitants live in caves not houses. Yes, you heard that right. Guadix is home to a maze of underground dwellings straight out of a fantasy film. The cave houses have been a popular type of accommodation in Spain since Moorish times. Traditionally, they were favoured because they provided a respite from the sun. Today, a number of gypsies and bohemian artists continue to live in these houses.
