To get a glimpse of the lavish lifestyle of colonial Goa’s land-owners, head to the small village of Chandor. From Margao, a pleasant drive through green paddy fields will lead you to Chandor’s two colonial mansions. Braganza House, the better-kept of the two, is the located on one side of the village square. Built in the 17th-century, this mansion is divided into two wings, which are occupied by two branches of the family. Inside, the Italian marble floors, Belgian chandeliers, Chinese porcelain, antique furniture and other treasures evoke the former glory of the house. It is advisable to make a prior appointment with the families for a guided tour. You can also visit the Fernandes House nearby, which has a secret basement with an escape tunnel to the river that was used by its former Hindu occupants.
