Kutumsar Caves

These are prehistoric caves located in Kanger Valley National Park, about 10 km away from the main entry gate of the National Park. The way goes through the dense sal trees on either side of the red gravel path with huge mounds of termites lining along the sides of the jungle lane. The caves are famous for their stalactite and stalagmite formation and a Shiv Linga is placed at the end of the cave, which attracts a lot of religious followers to this place. The entrance is very narrow and immediately goes underground among the limestone rocks through a small iron gate. Some persons manage the queue outside the cave and also inside the cave by carrying rechargeable light chargers along with them. It is better to carry a personal headlamp while visiting the cave as it helps in getting a good view of the wet needle shaped limestone formations. There are slippery patches inside the cave and a bit more carefulness in walking along the meandering corridors helps in enjoying the natural carving of the cave. There are species of frogs and blind fishes which dominate the fauna inside the cave. The way to the outside is through the same course that took one inside the cave.
