George Everest’s House, Mussoorie’s famed tourist spot, all set for a revamp

Sir George Everest’s house, which is a popular tourist hotspot in Mussoorie, is all set to get a makeover to attract more tourists. As per the latest news reports, around INR 23 crore might be invested in this project.

George Everest, who was the former Surveyor General of India and after whom the world’s highest peak has been named, is a popular name in Mussoorie as his home turned into a famous tourist site over the years. As per the plans, stargazing activities and a cartography museum will be organised here and built as per the redevelopment plans of the said spot.
Referring to this, Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj said that just like the United States has a section in the Smithsonian Museum dedicated to Albert Einstein, George Everest’s House will also be developed in similar lines.

Further, the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB) is planning to redevelop Sir George Everest’s house into a cartography museum. UTDB Secretary, referring to this development, said that the Survey of India will be working with them on this project. He further mentioned that conceptualisations and installations of equipment in the said museum will also be done by the Survey of India.
Referring to the stargazing activity, the official also mentioned that small huts will be built near George Everest’s House. Visitors will be able to look up at the night sky and retreat to the huts during the night or can even opt to sleep outside gazing the stars.

And after the redevelopment process is completed, UTDB will take the reins of operating the Everest House.
