This one is no regular mosque for it is an impressive blend of Buddhist and Islamic art. It was built in 1666-1667 to mark an agreement between Aurangzeb and Deldan Namgyal, Ladakh’s erstwhile king. As per the agreement, the Mughals vowed to protect Ladakh in any war. The mosque is more like a surprise on a horizon that is rife with the fort-like, ancient Buddhist monasteries. You can visit it on your first day in Leh, since you would be putting up in the city to get acclimatised and the mosque sits right in the city market. Read less
