Christchurch

Christchurch is a city undergoing a comeback. Reborn in the wake of earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, this leafy town has the honour of hosting the opening match at Hagley Oval, where they’ve been playing cricket for over a century. Cricket and Christchurch—the most English of New Zealand cities—have always gone hand in hand. Until the earthquakes, major cricket matches were played at AMI Stadium (formerly Lancaster Park). The tournament opener matches New Zealand's Black Caps against Sri Lanka on 14 February, followed by Pakistan vs the West Indies on 21 February, and England vs Scotland on 23 February. Hagley Oval will also host four international teams for warmup matches leading up to the Cup.
Around the matches, make sure you visit the new SOMO (South of Moorhouse Avenue) precinct for the edgiest eateries, the hub of the creative scene and top-notch shopping. You’ll also be well placed to tour nearby Banks Peninsula. Drive along the headland to the uniquely French colonial village of Akaroa, where you just might encounter the adorable Hector's dolphin; it’s one of the world's smallest and is only found in this area! See this region from the Christchurch Gondola for a 360 degree overview of the city, Canterbury Plains and, over the Port Hills, the beginnings of Banks Peninsula and its turquoise bays. Hot air balloon rides offer even more dramatic perspectives—there’s no better way to see the beauty of the quilt-like plains and the rugged Southern Alps than by floating over them.
