Huacas, Lima

Located close to the Lima city centre and right in the middle of Miraflores, lies this pre-Incan site. It offers a window through which you can take a peek into times long gone. This is an extraordinary site with pyramids, which were built with small bricks of clay—the fact that these pyramids are still standing strong, goes to prove the strength of ancient architectural skills. The art of brickwork at Huacas is impressive to say the least. There is a meagre entry fee to get in. Language is not a barrier here because English-speaking guides are widely available. These ancient ruins are dusty and dirty, so make sure you wear covered and comfortable footwear. Do not forget to carry your sun protection and a hat; the Sun can be harsh and there is no place to take shade and escape its wrath. The ruins are well-kept and give a taste of the life and culture that existed more than a thousand years ago. They shed light on how people lived in complex rooms on multiple floors. When you visit Huacas, make sure you stick around till the Sun sets; the site is lit at night and is an enthralling sight. There is a small museum and a gift shop to buy souvenirs and gifts for your loved ones.
If all that exploring has left you with a rumbling tummy, sample the fare at The Huaca Pullana restaurant. Food is tasty and the experience of dining amidst these ruins is in itself a memorable one. Do remember to book in advance because it stays full on most days. So make sure you plan a day trip to Huacas while you are in Lima.
