Here are some of Bishnupur’s most popular terracotta temples.
Rasmancha
Rasmancha is one of the most famous terracotta temples in Bishnupur. It is a unique structure built in the 17th century by the Malla king Bir Hambir. The temple is circular in shape, and its terracotta panels depict scenes from the Raslila, a form of traditional dance-drama depicting the life of the Hindu deity Krishna
Jorbangla Temple
Built by Raghunatha Singh in 1655, the Jorbangla Temple is another significant terracotta temple in Bishnupur. The name Jorbangla translates to twin-domed, and the temple features two distinct towers. The terracotta panels depict scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Madan Mohan Temple
This temple is dedicated to Krishna and was constructed by Durjan Singh Dev in 1694. The temple is known for its beautiful terracotta carvings, portraying episodes from Krishna's life and other mythological stories.
Shyam Rai Temple
The Shyam Rai Temple, built by King Raghunatha Singh in 1643, is dedicated to Krishna. It is characterised by its distinctive pyramidal structure, and the terracotta panels showcase various aspects of Lord Krishna's life and legends.
Radha Shyam Temple
The Radha Shyam Temple is dedicated to Radha and Krishna and was built by the Malla king Chaitanya Singh. The terracotta panels on the temple depict scenes from the Radha-Krishna legend.
Kalachand Temple
Constructed by King Raghunatha Singh, the Kalachand Temple is dedicated to Krishna. The terracotta panels here depict stories from the Krishna Leela, showcasing the playful and divine activities of Krishna and the gopis.
