Antequera

A visit to the city of Antequera is definitely one of the highlights of a trip to the province of Malaga. Even a cursory visit here is bound to take you back in time. There is a Moorish castle, a famous church (The Church of San Sebastian) and a gorgeous town hall—but its Antequera’s white houses, ochre rooftops and cobble-stoned alleys that make it perfect. People have been staying in Antequera since the Bronze Ages, so the city goes back a long way. However the Baroque period was one of the most prosperous periods in Antequera. That might explain the number of churches (32 at last count) in the city. These layers of history are everywhere to be seen here. The multi-faceted nature of Anterquera is truly fascinating. One thing is for sure—you will never tire of taking photos here.
The drive from Malaga’s city center to Antequera passes through some of the most stunning stretches of countryside that Spain has to offer. In summer, the entire landscape is laden with fields full of thousands of sunflowers. That itself is a spectacle to behold. It is akin to walking into a picture postcard that boasts of vibrant colours.
