Doi Suthep is a mountain located on the west side of town. It isn’t just a recognisable landmark but a national park as well. The mountain sits right on the edge of town, making it easily accessible and quick to get to, but you can decide how long you want to stay and explore―make a day of it. While many visitors will only make the trek up the mountain to the famous Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple to see its golden chedi overlooking the city of Chiang Mai, there is much more waiting to be discovered. Starting at the bottom of the mountain, travellers can visit the charming Huay Kaew Waterfall then stop at a couple of temples, such as Wat Palat, on their way up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Past the popular temple is Phuping Palace, a residence of the royal family that’s open for tours. Further up the mountain you’ll find signs leading you to hill tribe villages and Doi Pui National Park known for its camping, trails and beautiful Sakura cherry blossoms that bloom every year in December or early January. If going on your own, note that you stop for petrol before leaving the city centre and carry plenty of snacks and water. Food is available at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, but after that options are limited.
