Nakhoda Masjid

The largest mosque in Kolkata, the Nakhoda Masjid is one of the major tourist attractions of the city. It was built by Abdur Rahim Osman in 1926. He hailed from the region of Kutch in Gujarat and belonged to the Sunni Muslim community. Built on the lines of Akbar’s Tomb at Sikandra, the architecture of the mosque is a grand example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. The entrance of the mosque has a striking resemblance to that of the Buland Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri. The mosque has two minarets and three domes with an additional 25 minarets. The monument can accommodate 10,000 devotees during a prayer meeting. Inside the mosque, a small exhibition is held at regular intervals where you can choose to buy some exquisite ornaments. You can also by attar outside the mosque on all days, except Sundays. Tourists throng to this monument to catch glimpses of its exquisite architecture.
