Known as the Impregnable Castle of Bohemia, when firearms were still in the distant future, due to its incredibly thick stone walls, Loket Castle’s existence was first mentioned in the 12th century. It became a Gothic stronghold under the control of the Duchy of Luxemburg. The Queen of Bohemia, Eliška Přemyslovna, hid in this castle from her husband John of Luxemburg when her plot to overthrow her husband from the throne was uncovered. John ultimately conquered the castle by telling the castle guard that he was merely planning a friendly visit to his wife. He threw his wife and son in prison, and later sent his son to France who came back and become King Charles IV, perhaps the most famous king in Bohemian history. Later, Hussite followers tried to capture the castle twice but failed. It’s the testimony to the impregnability of Loket owing to its strategic location on a hill surrounded by rivers on three sides. Today, there’s much to see at Loket―the Margrave’s House, a famous porcelain museum, as well as a tiny, ancient rotunda dating back all the way to the founding of Locket itself. Myriad shots of the James Bond movie Casino Royale have been taken here.
