The city of Malaga is best known for being the birthplace of the famed Modernist painter Pablo Picasso. The Picasso Museum was opened only in 2003 in Malaga’s Buenavista Palace, a popular monument built on the site of a Nazrid Palace. The Museum houses over 250 works donated by Picasso’s descendants in a space of 8300 sq m.
While the collection here is not as expansive as it is at the Picasso Museum in Antibes (France), it provides the perfect introduction to Picasso’s oeuvre for the uninitiated. The size of the exhibit is not overwhelming or intimidating in the least. It highlights some of Picasso’s best works and gradually seduces the viewer with a combination of historical nuggets about the painter’s life and his artwork. It is possible to rent an audio guide or a personal guide to explain the importance of the art works displayed at the Picasso Museum.
