Mirogoj Cemetery

Zagreb heritage is so rich that even a cemetery is a must-visit site with nothing morbid about it; just the opposite in fact. Located on a low hill just on the outskirts of the city, Mirogoj Cemetery was built in the 19th century by noted architect and builder Herman Bolle. From outside, it looks like a stunning place with domed entrance and walls covered with lush green ivy. On the inside, it is that much more impressive with monumental arcades, pavilions, gateways and ivy covered walls. There is also an elegant church in the front with a beautiful facade. There are believed to be over 60,000 family plots where hundreds of thousands of people, including Croatia’s many famous personalities, lie at rest.
