This modern barrio has only found its identity in the last decade, establishing itself as the upmarket hub of design hotels, trendy eateries and the latest must-be-seen-in nightclubs. Puerto Madero residents are well-paid and high-flying.
Made up of four giant docks along the Rio de la Plata, Puerto Madero was first established in the late 19th century as a centre of trade. It was quickly abandoned as unsuitable, and remained desolate until the 1990s when developers saw potential in the old red brick warehouses. Fashionable restaurants and bars soon sprung up cashing in on the trend for industrial chic, as did a spate of loft-style apartments, hotels and office blocks.

These luxury developments have a business district feel far removed from the local community buzz of its westerly neighbour San Telmo, but the stretches of water and pedestrianised riverside walkways can make for pleasant strolling.
