Yes, it is not only the biggest opal producing town in Australia, but also in the world. In fact, almost 95 percent of the opal supply in world comes from Coober Peddy mines. Back in the year 1916, a lot of when people moved to Coober Pedy after opal stone was discovered in the region. But because of harsh summer conditions and soaring temperatures, the miners dug caves into the hillsides. So, even during raged temperatures outside, the underground temperatures remained cool and comfortable, which gave people the idea of turning these caves into their homes.

People love playing golf here but unlike other places, their golf games happen at night. It is because of the harsh weather conditions during the day time. So the gamers here play golf using glow-in-the-dark balls. This is also one reason that makes Coober Peddy a unique destination.
