Sigulda, located at the south-western end of Gauja National Park, is known as the ‘Switzerland of Latvia’ for its picturesque landscape, steep cliffs and beautiful banks. This is the town you should visit if you’re looking for nature and some beautiful views. The mountains, cliffs, hills and rolling wooded trails are enough to satisfy any visitor who’s had too much of the city and needs a break and some quietness. Since it’s a very small town, Sigulda can be easily covered on foot. Visitors can explore ruins of the castles built during the wars of the Livonian order and German missionaries. To get acquainted with nature, try taking a canoe tour of the national park or walk the wooded trails to Turaida. Visit Gutmanis Cave, and explore the centre of the town (Pils iela) where two large buffet-style cafes serve delicious local Latvian food.
