The city of Brussels has several roles to fulfil. It is the capital of the captivating country of Belgium and also the administrative head of the European Union. Moreover, it also plays host to the Secretariat of the Benelux (Belgium-Netherlands-Luxembourg) and the headquarters of the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). Despite being so deeply entrenched in international politics and diplomacy, it has in no way compromised upon its old-world aesthetic values. The Grand Place, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is easily the prettiest city hall and square in Europe and the detailed guildhalls and imposing spires tell tales of their own. A modern skyscraper is followed by an ornate heritage structure which is then succeeded by a run-down establishment with bright graffiti and creative murals. This speaks volumes about how it is a fascinating city of contrasts.
Despite the evident divide between the French and Dutch languages, both of which are spoken in all parts of the city, Brussels stands united when it comes to being a perfect host to outsiders from every corner of the globe. And once you’re there, you cease to be an outsider. That’s just how warmly it embraces you.
