One of the more popular places of worship in Kolkata, the foundation of the Thanthania Kalibari dates back to 1803. It is believed to have been built by a wealthy local resident named Shankar Ghosh. While the temple is more than two centuries old, the deity is said to be older than that. Dedicated to Goddess Sidddheswari (a form of Goddess Kali), the temple is thronged by devotees round the year. Since Tuesdays and Saturdays are considered auspicious by the Hindus, these two days attract maximum crowds. Tourists throng to this temple to pay homage. Amavasya or no moon day is another occasion when the temple complex attracts a lot of crowd. Kali Puja, usually held on the eve of Diwali is one of the best times to visit the temple. The evening aarti is a sight to behold. Do remember to capture it in your camera lenses. A stopover at the Thanthania Kalibari will complete your itinerary of a tour of Kolkata.
