The tale of New Zealand’s famous Cardona Bra Fence

Now, this must be one of the weirdest tourist attractions in the whole of New Zealand. The ‘bra fence’ as it is called is a world-famous hotspot visited by tourists from across the globe. At the Cardona Bra Fence, you’ll find probably all shapes, sizes and patterns of bras, for sure!

The story behind
This quirky tourist attraction is in Central Otago, featuring a chequered past. It all started back in the year 1999, when people living close by the fence found four bras, mysteriously hanging on a fence along the Cardrona Valley Road in Otago. Some people got a little defensive but more kept adding to the fence and in no time the place became a major tourist pull in the region. Even the passersby would come and hang their undergarments on the fence. And now, hanging bras on the fence has become a kind of popular ritual.


Later, a thief started cutting away the bras during the night time and that’s what added to the popularity of the fence. But every time the thief took away bras, more were added. Eventually, the fence got so popular, that it had to be moved from the main highway to the driveway of Kelly Spaans. It was, apparently, causing a lot of traffic jam.

How did it get its name?

The fence got its name ‘Bradrona’ in 2015 during a breast cancer fundraiser event. Around $30000 were raised by people and since then, a few more similar fences have popped up in the region and country. However, this is the original one you need to visit when in New Zealand!
