Taking prompt action to deal with huge passenger rush to and fro Delhi and Chandigarh, Indian Railways have added two more coaches to the afternoon Shatabdi Express train. Of the two extra coaches attached to 12046/12045 Chandigarh-New Delhi-Chandigarh Shatabdi Express train service, one is a chair car and another one is for the executive class. Both the coaches have 124 seats in total, out of which 46 are executive-class seats, whereas the remaining 78 are general chair car. The move has come considering the increasing passenger traffic post the temporary shutdown of Chandigarh Airport for repair and runway expansion work. According to news reports, the Northern Railways had written to the Punjab and Haryana High Court informing them about the plan of action devised to fit in the high passenger count due to the holiday season. Around 1,000 passengers can be seated in the afternoon-run Shatabdi Express train service.

From May 12 to May 31, no civil or military passenger flights will function from Chandigarh Airport, as per the sources. About 1,00,000 passengers will have to make arrangements for alternate mode of transport – either train or road – in order to commute to and fro Chandigarh and other destinations.
