Vienna Tourism has a piece of advice for its guests - quit reading reviews on the internet (except ours, ‘cause we are awesome). So basically, you should not read any online reviews regarding cities and their experiences, which probably includes us too. But now that you are here, please do.
According to reports, Vienna city has launched a travel campaign called, Unrating Viennais, which asks tourists to avoid reading online reviews. This also includes listicles on city experiences (ahem).
The campaign website makes its point by saying that modern people rate everything these days, and we tend to trust someone else’s opinion and ratings when travelling. This, in turn, makes it difficult for us to experience the new. It says that this results in fewer chance encounters. So basically, a modern-day Before Sunrise is impossible if you go on reading these reviews. The campaign tagline says, “Who decides what you like?”
The campaign goes on to illustrate the problem by adding actual images of real reviews, such as a romantic boat ride with a one-star, as the reviewer writes, “boooring”. Someone else calls the view from the swing ride at Prater, “rubbish”.
