What's inside the smallest tiger reserve in India?
Did you know that India is home to more than 70% of the world’s wild tiger population? As of 2024's report, there are 57 tiger reserves in the country protecting these majestic big cats. The smallest of them all, Bor Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra, is a hidden gem, and spans just 138.12 sq. km. Don't get fooled by its size. It may be small but it is an ecologically significant reserve that plays a vital role in tiger conservation.
Smallest tiger reserve in India
Despite its compact size, it plays a significant role in conservation efforts and provides a protected habitat for tigers and other wildlife. Declared a tiger reserve in 2014, it was earlier part of the Bor Wildlife Sanctuary, which existed since 1970. If you are visiting Nagpur, you might want to schedule a quick trip to Bor Tiger Reserve. It is located just 78 kilometres from Nagpur.
Vital wildlife corridor for tigers
One of the reasons why Bor was declared a Tiger Reserve is because it was (and still is) one of the most important wildlife corridors in the region. One of Bor’s most important roles is its connectivity with larger tiger reserves in Maharashtra. It serves as a wildlife corridor linking Tadoba-Andhari, Pench, and Melghat Tiger Reserves, allowing tigers and other animals to move safely across different forest areas.
Rich biodiversity and wildlife
Don't think that since it is small, there'll be too little to see. Bor Tiger Reserve is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. It shelters Bengal tigers, leopards, sloth bears, Indian gaurs (bison), sambar deer, chital, wild boars, langurs, and rhesus macaques.
Unique landscape and forest cover
Bor Tiger Reserve features a mix of dry deciduous forests, open grasslands, and riverine vegetation along the Bor River, which flows through the sanctuary. This diverse ecosystem provides an ideal habitat for both herbivores and carnivores, ensuring a balanced food chain. If you are lucky, you will be able to spot wildlife in the wetlands and on the banks of the river.
Exclusive and less crowded safari experience
Unlike bigger reserves like Tadoba and Jim Corbett, Bor offers a quieter, less commercialized safari experience, making it an excellent destination for nature lovers who prefer offbeat wildlife getaways. Jeep safaris are available through Hingni and Adegaon entry gates, with morning and evening slots. Since the reserve is not as crowded, visitors have a better chance of spotting tigers and other animals in their natural habitat without excessive tourist activity.
