World’s ancient engineering marvels and where to find them; one is from India
Journey back in time to explore the wonders of the ancient world, where remarkable engineering feats will amaze you like no other. You will have to see the craftsmanship of civilisations long gone up close to believe your eyes. These architectural marvels continue to inspire awe and fascination. If you are hooked by now, here are some extraordinary structures from across the world.
Moai, Easter Island - AD 1400-1650
Easter Island's enigmatic Moai statues stand as one of the most perplexing ancient monuments in history. Crafted over the span of a year each, these over 800 monolithic statues were hewn using rudimentary stone tools called 'toki' and then erected atop chieftains' tombs. The logistical feat of moving these colossal figures, some weighing up to 80 tonnes, into place has puzzled historians for centuries, with theories ranging from rolling them on logs to rocking them side to side to mimic walking.
Sacsayhuaman, Peru - AD 1438-1471
Sacsayhuaman, an archaeological marvel nestled in Peru, was once home to a sacred Incan structure constructed with mammoth boulders weighing up to 125 tonnes each. The towering walls, composed of dry stones arranged in a zigzag pattern, boast such impeccable alignment that not even a sheet of paper can be inserted between them. The mystery deepens with the stones' transportation from the quarry to the site, spanning nearly two miles, leaving historians to wonder about the ingenious methods employed.
Mesa Verde, Colorado, USA - AD 1200-1275
Dating back to the Pueblo III period, Mesa Verde in Colorado is adorned with over 600 cliff dwellings, offering a glimpse into the ancient Puebloan civilization's ingenuity. Carved into sandstone alcoves, these dwellings provided residents with shelter and protection against the elements. Among these dwellings, the Cliff Palace, with its more than 150 rooms and 23 kivas, stands as a testament to the community's architectural prowess, although the reasons behind the village's eventual abandonment remain shrouded in mystery.
Tikal, Guatemala - AD 200-900
Tikal, nestled amidst Guatemala's dense jungle, showcases the grandeur of ancient Mayan architecture, with temples, shrines, and acropolises dotting its landscape. Notable among these structures is the Temple of the Two-Headed Snake, boasting intricate plaster-surfaced stones and elaborate stucco facades. While these architectural marvels are believed to have astronomical significance, much about their construction and purpose remains a subject of scholarly inquiry.
Borobudur, Indonesia - AD 778-850
Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the world, remained hidden beneath volcanic ash and jungle foliage until its rediscovery in 1835. Despite its grandeur, many mysteries surround its construction and original purpose. Carved from andesite obtained from nearby quarries, the temple's construction spanned 75 years and required meticulous craftsmanship. Its thousands of carved reliefs continue to offer tantalizing clues about its enigmatic past.
Leshan Giant Buddha, China - AD 803
Carved into the cliffs of southwest China, the Leshan Giant Buddha stands as a testament to the Tang Dynasty's architectural prowess. This towering sculpture, standing at 233 feet tall, boasts intricate detailing, including 1,021 buns in its coiled hair and feet large enough to accommodate up to a hundred people. Behind the Buddha lies a sophisticated drainage system that has preserved the monument against erosion over the centuries.
Ellora Caves, India - AD 550-750
The Ellora Caves, a sacred complex in India, feature Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain temples carved from volcanic basalt stone. Among these temples, the grand Kailasa Temple stands out, with its towering height of 104 feet and intricate architectural details. Carved from a sloping basalt hill, the temple features a three-story town with elaborate reliefs and sculptures, offering a glimpse into ancient India's rich cultural heritage.
