Referring to this development, an official in the know-how stated that a 13-member team trekked on the Khankara-Rudraprayag route recently to check the condition. He also added that till 1947, pilgrims used these routes to offer obeisance in the Himalayan dhams, and after the construction of roads, these routes were somehow neglected and not frequently used.
He also mentioned that these routes can offer a viable option to authorities for rescue operations in case of an emergency, as it is always good to have an alternate route. Apart from the alternate route, these also have the potential to offer adventure tourism to thrill seekers. As per old-timers, the concept of chatti (refers to a small place for pilgrims, where they can have food and take rest) was very common on these traditional routes. Earlier, Karnaprayag, Nandprayag and Srinagar were chattis, which were later developed into towns.
