Anarchist commune, holistic apothecary and vegan restaurant, Goldengate is a strange hippy experiment. Largely centered around a man called “Dr. Bob” who runs “Psychedelic Healing Shack and Vegan/Vegetarian Cafe” (which includes a chiropractic and apothecary), Goldengate is an anti-capitalist community trying to revive the neighbourhood through hippydom. This means everything from running a bike shop, helping people fix up their houses to giving out free meals to those who can’t afford them.

So checkout the cafe (which is pretty damn good) and talk to the people about holistic health, your future zodiac signs or to Dr. Bob about capitalism and the universe. Everyone is extremely friendly, and you’ll see a mix of different kinds of people, from artists to hitchhikers, gunslingers to polyamorous college kids. If you need a place to stay, people are always happy to let you crash. The community is fairly transient, and always has a good scoop on a new abandoned building to check out.
