Discovering the seven natural wonders of Africa

Africa, one of the most naturally diverse continents, has stretches of untouched nature and landscape brimming with rich wildlife and beautiful cultures. The land of beauty, Africa is home to some amazing natural wonders. Africa has the world’s largest free roaming wild animals and the largest collection of carnivores. The continent is home to the Big 7: lion, leopard, crocodile, elephant, rhinoceros, hippopotamus, and the lowland gorilla.

The Serengeti in Kenya, also known as the Maasai Mara, is an African ecosystem extending from northern Tanzania to south-western Kenya. The place hosts the world’s largest terrestrial mammal migration. The place is divided into various game reserves and the famous Serengeti National Park in Tanzania which is home to lions and a large species of mammals. The place is also known for being an abode to more than 500 varieties of birds.

It is the world’s third largest desert after the Antarctic and Arctic. Being the hot deserts of the world, the Sahara is huge and is comparable to the size of the United States. The desert covers much of North Africa and is the abode of various species of fox, addax, Saharan cheetah, monitor lizard, sand vipers and desert crocodiles, among others. Not only animals, but the desert also is home to several wandering African tribes (nomads).

Situated between Asia and Africa, Red Sea Reef is an inlet of seawater in the Indian Ocean. The Gulf of Aden and the Bab el Mandeb strait connect the Red Sea with the ocean. The sea is renowned for its rich corals and marine life. More than 1000 species of invertebrates and 200 hard and soft coral species live in the sea and nearly 10 percent of the fish in the Red Sea are endemic!

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Okavango Delta is a huge stretch of swampy, inland delta located in the central region of the Kalahari’s basin. One of the features of delta is that the water of the river never reaches the ocean and evaporates completely during the dry season. The famous Moremi Game Reserve is on the eastern side of the delta. The region is also home to enormous wildlife such as the hippopotamus, South African cheetah, African bush elephant and lion, among others.

Another prime Seven Wonders of Africa, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located west of Arusha in Tanzania, it is the biggest inactive, intact volcanic caldera in the world! As per records, the crater was formed some two to three million years ago after a massive volcano exploded and collapsed on itself.

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa rising about 16000 ft above sea level. This dormant volcano in Tanzania is the prime feature of the Kilimanjaro National Park. Mountain climbers from all over visit the park to climb the mountain. There are official trekking routes that climbers are requested to follow.
