Kanda or onion pohe is one of Maharashtra’s favourite breakfasts. The pohe is made by roasting and de-husking rice grains, and then pounding them to make them flat. The thinner the grain, the better the pohe. One of the best places to eat this dish is at Bipin Snacks. A 50-year-old hole-in-the-wall joint just opposite the railway booking office on Karve road, it is one of the city’s best kept secrets and a favourite among locals. The pohe here is unbelievably yummy, served soft with slightly cooked onions and a sprinkling of sev over the top. In addition, their sheera, sabudana khichadi, vada pav and pav pattice are superbly flavoured and filled with spice. Order a cup of their special chai alongside. Read less
