The Prime Minister and food
Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, has been endowed with a celebrity-status by the people of India. Hence, whatever place he visits, becomes famous, and whatever delicacy he eats, gains prominence. Food, in particular, has been associated with PM Modi. And here’s how.
Mangoes
In an interview with Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar in April 2019, PM Modi made a candid revelation about his love for mangoes. Recounting his childhood experiences, he said that he would pluck the mangoes from the trees in the farms, and eat them since it was difficult for his family to afford the luxury of buying mangoes in those days. Gujarat is not only famous for mangoes but also its aamras-puri dish.
Idli, Dosa and Vada
In October 2019, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Chennai for the first time after his re-election as PM, he applauded the city’s food and cultural scene. While praising the students and researchers at Singapore-India Hackathon at the IIT-Madras Research Park, Modi said that he felt the satiety level of the participants who had feasted on Chennai’s power-packed breakfast Idli, Dosa and Vada. It is easy to guess that the PM would also have enjoyed the same fare during his trip.
Litti Chokha and tea
On a pleasant day of February 2020 when PM Modi walked into the Hunar Haat in New Delhi, he chose to feast on the humble Litti-Chokha dish of Bihar at one of the stalls. Owned by a native of Ptna Ranjan Raj, the stall became so famous after being graced by Modi’s presence that numerous curious and hungry visitors started thronging the stall to relish Litti-Chokha.
Langar at Gurdaspur
Ahead of the 550th anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2019 ate at a langar in Gurdaspur’s Dera Baba Nanak. Accompanied by Punjab’s Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, Union Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal and other dignitaries, the PM seemed to have enjoyed his meal-time at his Gurdwara.
