After walking into Everest just take a seat or politely stand out of the way until one is available. There is no need to order as there is only one item on the menu: buffalo momos with a cheese-cilantro-peanut sauce that is so good people literally drink it. One taste and you are hooked! (Why do you think I’ve been here so many times?)
Eating momos at Everest is different than anywhere else in Nepal. Because the sauce is more prized than the momo itself, guests like to use their spoon to poke a hole in the top of the momo and then dump in several spoonfuls of the sauce. Next you double-up on sauce by scooping as much sauce up in the spoon as possible along with the momo. For those who really want to take it to the next level, you can follow this all up with a few spoonfuls of sauce by itself as you are slowly chewing the momo. Yes, eating momos at Everest is truly an art form.
These momos have become so famous that in 2014 the Discovery Channel tried to film a segment on Everest but was politely denied. Turns out the two brothers who own and manage the restaurant are also the only ones that know the secret recipe of the momo sauce. Not even the owners’ sons, who also work at the restaurant, know the recipe. Every day New Everest Momo Center makes 15,000 momos and closes whenever they run out usually around 7pm. Earlier on Saturdays.
Best Bet? 10 momos (Rs 70) and an ice cold Coke (Rs 25) is a perfect snack on a hot day. Or see if you can break my record of 30 momos.
