Kek Lok Si Temple

SIGHTSEEING, GEORGE TOWN Updated : May 20, 2014, 04.43 PM IST

kek lok siThe largest temple in south-east Asia, the 19th century Kek Lok Si Temple is best known for the seven-storey pagoda (which is as old as the temple), and a huge bronze statue of the Goddess of Mercy—Kuan Yin (a deity in Penang). The best time to visit the temple is during the Chinese New Year (in the months of January / February) when the temple is adorned with bright lanterns and visited by pilgrims from across the world. The temple also houses many prayer halls, bell towers, and pagodas. It’s a good idea to head here first thing in the morning to take part in the morning chants and prayers ceremony. Located in Air Itam, Kek Lok Si is surrounded by the Air Itam market, which has a smattering of restaurants and gift shops.
