Strolling through the University of Chicago in pretty, leafy Hyde Park, you could mistake your surroundings for Cambridge or Oxford – many college buildings here have been modeled on iconic structures in those English university cities.
Walk west along 57th Street through the campus, past excellent coffee houses and secondhand bookshops, to reach the vast Museum of Science and Industry. The Smart Museum of Art and the Oriental Institute are one street north and south, respectively.
In Washington Park, African-American heritage is explored at the DuSable Museum of African History. Nearby, the Bronzeville Information Center can provide a self-guided walking tour of sites of interest around this area where the African-American cultural intelligentsia flourished. Be sure to see the remarkable mural ‘The Wall of Daydreaming and Man’s Inhumanity to Man’ at 47th Street and Calumet.
