In the sweat and heat of the city summer, clubbers make for the seaside, and the coastline of suburban Athens from Pireas to Vouliagmeni is lined with glamorous clubs. While Island is a little harder to reach (take a tram to Glyfada then a taxi for the final journey), it is considered the most fashionable place to party by the sea.

The beach-hut chic lounge opens out onto the sea, and the views from the terrace are stunning. The restaurant serves Mediterranean food and sushi, but stick to the much-lauded tapas. If you’re a wine buff, ask for a tour of the cellar, which has over 150 Greek wines and cigars.
