Situated on the banks of the Bagmati River, the massive Pashupatinath complex is one of the holiest pilgrimage spots in Nepal. It’s best-known for housing a major temple of the Hindu god Shiva, also known as Pashupati. While the present temple was constructed in the 17th century, its history dates back to 400 AD. It has been built in the pagoda style of architecture, with a two-tiered roof rising above the central shrine. Only Hindus are allowed to enter the temple premises. The central point of interest is the black four-headed idol of Pashupati, and a golden statue of his bull, Nandi.
