Word to the wise: To hit numerous antiques dealers in one go, visit the Sablon Antiques Centre, a vast space which hosts over 20 dealers selling antiques, vintage collectibles and curios.

Antiques dealers and art galleries cluster in the narrow streets fanning out from the Place du Grand Sablon, in the heart of the Sablon district. The square is surrounded by quaint historic buildings, some dating back to the 17th century, and the entire district has a 'lived-in' feel. People flock here not only to live and settle down, but also to shop and catch up with friends over coffee, resulting in a vibe that's friendly and unassuming, despite the number of distinguished shops. And it's just far enough from the centre to be refreshingly free of tourists.
The square, which hosts a buzzing weekend antiques and book market, is a good starting point, and also adjoins the stunning Notre Dame du Sablon Church. The 19th century gardens of the Place du Petit Sablon is an oasis in the city and a wonderful place to rest weary legs. For an even better pick-me-up, visit one of the many chocolatiers and pastry shops around the square.
