It’s usually assumed that New Orleans is subsumed by French influence, but the city’s and region’s chequered history signifies various other influences which reflects in the cuisine available all over the city. Angelo Brocato’s history goes back to Sicily and its food traditions. More than 110 years old and run by the Bocato family, it started as an ice cream outlet and still dishes out the original favourite, torroncino, a vanilla gelato blenched with almonds and laced with cinnamon. However, more popular are the deli’s sumptuous Italian treats, especially cannoli, a cylindrical pastry shell filled with sweet ricotta. The chocolate variation, where the shell is dipped in chocolate, is sinfully delightful. Also when you set your foot here, don’t forget to sample pastries, biscotti, cheesecake, éclairs, tarts and a wide range of gelato flavours.
