Another of Dublin's well-preserved little pubs with a colourful history, McDaid's location just off Grafton Street means that its tourist quota is higher than is ideal.
Still, there are many worst places in the city for a pint, and it's an essential stop-off for fans of Brendan Behan, its best-known - and bawdiest - customer, or, indeed, other writer regulars such as Patrick Kavanagh, Louis MacNeice and Flann O'Brien.

One suspects that, should this famously sharp-tongued, boozy literary set be around today, they would be horrified by the crush of map-toting tourists in their favourite haunt - and then tap each one for a free drink.
