Word to the wise: Instead of paying the Observatory fee, you could settle for a cocktail (around USD 15) at the Signature Lounge one floor below for pretty much the same view.

Often overlooked by visitors, The John Hancock Observatory offers proof that the tallest buildings don't necessarily have the best views. While it is actually eight floors lower than the Willis Tower, the Observatory's location slightly north of the downtown core means you get perfect views of Chicago's phenomenal central cluster of skyscrapers.
Standing 1,127 feet up, views from this tower completed in 1968 are certainly impressive, while lines to enter the tower are also relatively short. To cap it all, observatory also claims to have America's fastest elevators, so the ear-popping ride to the top takes no time at all.
