Less than one hundred years ago, The Meadows was little more than grazing land for sheep - yet today it’s the city’s most elaborate green space. Located just a kilometre or so from Princes Street, the Meadows is a large open park used by locals and tourists alike for watching cultural events and music festivals, undertaking political marches and demonstrations or simply relaxing on the grass and picnicking in summer. Popular plate: There are a number of cafés in the park, but the best is the Swedish-run Peter’s Yard – famous for its gorgeous cinnamon buns.
For active types, the park is also home to a number of free sports and entertainment facilities, from tennis courts and cycle paths to a pitch and putt golf course.
