Founded in 1928 as an outcome of the music conference that was held in conjunction with the All India Congress the previous year, the Madras Music Academy was conceived as an institution that would set the standard for Carnatic music in the state. It is still the city’s most popular venue for Carnatic classical music and bharatanatyam dance performances. The best time to visit Chennai is during the Kutcheri season in December and January. The Academy’s most famous events, the December Music Festival and the Dance Festival, are also held during this period.
