Located inside Sayaji Baug, this museum was built in 1894 by the Gaekwad ruler Sayajirao III. Like the Lakshmivilas Palace, it was also designed in the Indo-Saracenic style by British architects Major Charles Mant and RF Chisolm, and combines Mughal, Maratha and European elements. Besides focusing on Indian art and the history of Baroda, the museum also has sections for sculptures, textiles, coins and objets d’art from Europe, Japan, Tibet, Nepal, Egypt, and central and south-east Asia. The Picture Gallery houses Mughal miniature paintings, Tibetan art, and works by European masters such as JMW Turner and John Constable.
