Built in 1876 to commemorate the visit of the Prince of Wales, this colonial museum was modelled on London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. The impressive building was designed by the British engineer Samuel Swinton Jacob in an Indo-Saracenic style, which drew upon elements of Mughal, Rajput and British architecture. It exhibits a large collection of miniature paintings, royal portraits, Indian arts and crafts, sculptures, musical instruments, coins, carpets and arms and armour. The surrounding Ram Niwas Garden was laid out later as part of a famine relief project, and now encloses a zoo, an aviary, a greenhouse and a herbarium.
