The museum houses a private collection of its founder, Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza de Kászon. The permanent collection of 1600 paintings displays predominantly European Arts from 13th to 20th century in chronological order. Almost all the big names and other well known artists are covered, besides the usual renowned renaissance French and Italian masters. Some of the highlights include 'Christ and the Samaritan Woman' by Duccio di Buoninsegna, 'Young Knight in a Landscape' by Vittore Carpaccio, ‘1586 Massacre of the Innocents’ by Lucas Van Valckenborch, 'Woman in Bath' by Roy Lichtenstein, and portraits of Antonello da Messina, and Hans Memling.
