The Haji Ali Dargah is Mumbai’s most popular mosque and tomb, located on an islet 500 metres off the coast of Worli in South Mumbai. A popular attraction here is to find a Tambourine Qawwalli performer singing religious songs. The Dargah was constructed in 1431 in memory of a wealthy Muslim merchant, Sayyed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, who gave up all his worldly possessions before making a pilgrimage to Mecca. The Dargah was constructed in 1431 in memory of a wealthy Muslim merchant, Sayyed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, who gave up all his worldly possessions before making a pilgrimage to Mecca. Many Mumbaikars, from every religion are said to have faith in the blessings of the Haji Ali Dargah and visit the place regularly for prayers. Friday is the most auspicious day according to Islam and naturally one of the most crowded days to visit the dargah as 1000s of Mumbaikars drop by to offer their prayers and get blessed.
