This one is meant for the most ardent of travellers out here, strictly. Only the ardent ones, for these trips are not for the Instagram obsessed travellers, neither for the ones seeking some comfortable escapes. These are the trips of a lifetime, and perhaps more than that. You will never have more perfect moments for your travel journal if you keep one; choose one or choose all, and I can vouch for the fact that there will be no equals to these.
1. Island goals - Tristan da Cunha
Tristan da Cunha is the most remote inhabited island on the Earth, and this trip is for somebody, who is all about grand bucket lists. It lies as a cut off speck in the Atlantic and has a population of under 300. You can only get here aboard a research vessel, after a ticket that would cost more than a bomb. Plus, an approval from the Tristan government.
2. Sail around the world
While the practical way to pull this off will be as a crew member on different ships (yes, you will find a lot of these options online), you cannot call it sailing in its true form. Circumnavigating the world can be done in all aplomb by buying a boat, straightening the sails, and going all ahoy. Yes, you can have a customised boat to pull off this feat, at a good cost though.
3. Volunteering in a Himalayan monastery
This one is a favourite of mine, even as I wait for a more successful and enriching experience. Nevertheless, you can volunteer at one of the Buddhist monasteries in the Himalayas, spread over Nepal, Bhutan, India and Tibet. You can find all the information online, and will find around 30 monasteries welcoming people from all over the world. Most of these programmes need at least a month’s commitment and meagre donations to keep the place going.
4. Of Egypt and its pyramids
You really cannot deny the lure of these mammoth manmade wonders. A trip to the pyramids of Egypt will make you tread the thin line between fantasy and reality, for you will be left juggling between the time of pharaohs, Egyptian gods and contemporary sciences.
5. Jungle walks in Borneo
A trip to the third largest island in the world will do much for the nature lovers as well as anyone having a fear of creepy-crawlies! If I have your attention now, you can pretty much book your tickets to Borneo, for some wonderful time at a rainforest. Perfect for anyone in love with jungle feels.
6. Cruising the Amazon
If visiting a rainforest does not feel alluring enough to you, there is a way to make it more exciting. Hop over from Borneo to Amazon for a river cruise that can go on for days and even months, if you wish. The Amazon rainforests make for a place that is steeped in mystery, thrill, and fantasy—so cut off from the world that you might have a hard time coming back to the more real, practical world.
7. Diving between tectonic plates!
This is an essential one for those running high on adrenaline. At Silfra, Iceland, you can go diving between two tectonic plates and have an experience that you will remember forever. The two plates here are Eurasian and North American, so you can very well imagine the thrill of ticking it off your bucket list.
8. A wild African Safari
It is time that you have your own National Geographic sort of experience, and get a whiff of what wildlife feels like. Ask me one place to go for one such experience, and I will answer with “Tanzania”. Its rugged terrains and an equally rugged wildlife is what the best documentaries are made of; once there, you will have trouble forgetting what a lion’s roar sounds like in real. Gear up.
Another worthy contender in the list is a stargazing experience at the Mauna Kea Observatory in Hawaii. It houses some of the best skygazing equipment that you can ask for; with this, you can even have your first out-of-this-world experience.
