More than a century ago, Manhattan's Lower East Side was home to the largest Jewish community in the world, teeming with garment shops, kosher butchers, delis, pickle pushcarts and other traditional vendors. While that influence is still evident, today the neighbourhood is better known for its upscale restaurants, hotels and nightlife. Get some reminders of the old days with the Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy, which offers both private and public tours, bringing visitors to beautiful synagogues, tenement buildings, the Essex Street Market and other notable architectural and cultural sites of this former immigrant enclave.
